21 reviews for French wine regions : map of 200 french wine
This map of French wines, in a metro style, clearly shows the main vineyards of France: Champagne, Rhone Valley wines, Burgundy wines, Bordeaux wines, Loire wines, South-West, Jura, Languedoc-Roussillon, Provence wines, Savoy and Corsica, Alsace…
Did you know that with the 200 native grape varieties, France offers about 2900 different wines? To speak more concretely, if we tasted a different French wine every day, it would take you 8 years to taste them all! As a wine lover (amateur? I never know how to say it), I wanted to create a French wine map with all the useful information about French wines. At home, when we are invited, we usually bring a bottle of wine. And very often, when one of my guests arrives with a bottle, I don’t know where the wine comes from. That’s why I created this map to help me find out where this French wine comes from, but also what grape varieties are used.
Map of French wines in metro style
I have gathered in this poster the best French grape varieties and vineyards. You will find, for each French red or white wine, the French grape varieties used for its production. In order to facilitate the reading, I created a layout in metro style. Thus you will find the vineyards and the wine regions in this French wine map: :
- Champagne
- Wines from the Rhone Valley,
- Wines from Burgundy,
- Alsace,
- Bordeaux,
- Wines from the Loire Valley,
- Wines of the Jura,
- Languedoc-Roussillon,
- Wines of Provence,
- Wines of Savoy,
- an finally the wines of Corsica
Generally speaking, the wines of Northern France are more famous for their white wines such as Chablis, Riesling and Burgundy wines. The Rhone Valley and Bordeaux wines are more famous for their red wines. Saint-Joseph, Gigondas, Hermitage, Beaujolais, Saint-Emilion, Château Margaux, Médoc… and you must try the white wine of Condrieu, my favorite! Sweet white wines from the South-West like Monbazillac and Sauternes are the best to drink with a slice of Foie Gras. Rosé wines from Provence are traditionally drunk in summer as an aperitif.
Map of French wines: Vineyards and grape varieties

For example, for Burgundy wines, the main grape varieties used to produce red wine are Pinot noir, Pinot gris and Gamay. On the other hand, for the white wines of Burgundy, the grape varieties used are Chardonnay, Aligoté and Melon. Speaking of grape varieties, did you know that with the 200 native grape varieties, France produces about 2900 different wines?
